The Sydney Film Festival is on this week and will be running until 15th of June, with over 160 films to choose from and screening all over the city. 160 films is no joke, and flicking through a program guide if you’re not a film buff up to date with every entrant to pass through the film festival circuit before it gets to us here in Australia, makes heading into the festival a bit daunting, but forget about the films when you can head downstairs at Town Hall which is being transformed once again for the 3rd year of the Sydney Film Festival Hub.
The best picks for this year would be the Vladmaster Viewmaster Experience, where Vladimir, an artist from Portland, has specifically created a set of photographs for a photo reel that the audience will enjoy individually by flicking through their own viewmaster with soundscapes being sculpted around the images. Movie watching pared back, like a kaleidoscope of sensory imput. Next up would be the Francis Ford Question Mark Trivia on Wednesday June 11th at 8:30pm. If you were a fan of Goodgod’s themed Trivia Nights then this is the event for you, whether arrive with your Posse of film buff friends, or alone with a drink in hand and a sociability, it’ll be a wicked night of raucous and heated trivia. For the riot grrl, party at Freak Me Out: Girl Rock Riot on Saturday June 14th from 9pm to midnight with DJ Daz Chandler at the helm spinning all your favourite rock and punk of the likes of Sleater Kinney and Bikini Kill.
The space in the hub is like an apartment block without walls, where you can float from space to space of specifically furnished lounge sets and spaces each with their own slick homely feeling. Little Creature ale is a-plenty at the bar, and after you arm yourself with a Pale Ale, you can head over to the well stocked Title store at the Hub, with everything from design books to DVD’s of all the classics that JB doesn’t stock to a good mix of classic Dave Brubeck Band jazz to film soundtracks to the likes of The Graduate.
There’s a photobooth in the foyer of the Hub this year where you have a chance to win a Flexipass 30 for next year’s festival if you record the best 30-second review of a film you’ve seen. It feels like Messina Gelato is everywhere with its new store in Bondi, it’s new recipe book to recreate your favorite Game of Thrones themed flavours (Khaleesi and Tyrion are rightly the best flavours) and now, there will also be a Messina Cart at the Hub to challenge the supremacy of cinema Choctops.
In the line of talks and panels, the Hub also has that covered if you want to get your David and Margaret on with Q&A sessions upstairs at Town Hall, as well as at the Apple Store. If you’re eager to have a crack at the films this year but are stuck on what film to watch and have a few hours to kill, the Hub will be armed with its own troupe of volunteer Program Guru’s that will sit down with you for 10mins and based on your interests and favorite films, they’ll recommend something for you to see, and the best part is because once you do this, the Hub offers a $10 discount box office where you can buy a cheaper ticket for the day and take a chance on a film. If none of these pique you’re interest, or if you’re out and about in the Sydney CBD one night with nothing to do head here to see what’s on.
